Firefly

The Firefly Lamp

This machine is a bit of an oddity. It appears to be a device similar to a crystal radio set from the 1920s. It has old electrical parts such as an air gap capacitor, a crude hand wound coil, and a galena crystal that acts as a simple cat's whisker detector. At the heart of this machine is a very unique light bulb that seems to be based on the neon tube bulb. What sets this light bulb apart from normal neon lights is the addition of xenon and argon gas as well as some fine silver powder. The silver powder seems to act as a conductor of some sort. The tiny bulb itself is housed inside a small bottle that contains what's called dry air gas. What exactly dry air gases is anybody's guess at this point. The bottle appears to be sealed with a substance known as water glass. The machine appears to be very old and from the enclosed papers. It is my guess that this cocktail of gases and silver powder allow the light bulb to glow at a voltage much lower than the standard 90 volts required by a neon bulb. I am reminded of a certain children’s science toy from my youth that was a tube with a neon bulb inside that would glow when it was touched to an object charged with static electricity. This device seems to be based on a very similar principle: only it is receiving energy, although we don't know exactly what type of energy. I expect it's electrical energy from the air using its two very unique antennas, which is reminiscent of very early radio devices.

The exact purpose of the device seems somewhat of a mystery. It is unknown exactly what type of signal or thing this was meant to detect. The good news is the machine is quite functional and flickers from time-to-time for unknown reasons. This machine needs a great deal of experimentation and exploration to get to the bottom of exactly what this device is all about.

Chiller

The Chiller Thermometer

What you see before you is a very early ghost detector. The detection of sudden change in temperature was well documented as phenomena long associated with a other worldly presence. Thermometers like this one would be placed them in an area where activity is suspected.

Often there would be a sleight visible change in temperature, sometimes the red alcohol within the glass tubes would register quick substantial drops in the room temperature, a sure sign of a something hovering near by...

Spirit Telegraph

Spirit Telegraph

We know that Edison had many men that were geniuses working for him including for a time the great Nikola Tesla. Edison built an idea factory where through hard work, thinking and experimentation new inventions could roll out the door. One of the most mysterious devices ever worked on by Thomas A. Edison was a machine that had the ability to communicate with the dead. It is commonly believed that the pursuit to build such a machine was a complete waste of time and utter folly, no machine was ever sold by Edison and no patent was applied for such a machine, however we do have a letter of correspondence between Mr. Edison and a man named William B. Lamont who had his own ideas for communication with the dead.

Re-Animator

Re-Animator

In 1984, the Fresno Metropolitan Museum opened its doors in Fresno, CA. Shortly thereafter the Museum acquired the RE-ANIMATOR. However, the RE-ANIMATOR was never placed on display at the Museum. Instead the RE-ANIMATOR was relegated to the Museum’s basement for over 20 years because it was classified as a “German Quack Medical Device” by a Museum curator.

However, this was not the first time that the RE-ANIMATOR was considered a quack medical device. Between the years of 1905 and 1921, Dr. Edward Conrad Dippel of Germany successfully performed RE-ANIMATION experiments, based on the work of Luigi Galvani who believed that the force of animal electricity could activate the muscles of animal specimens. Dr. Dippel traveled throughout Europe, demonstrating his success with the RE-ANIMATOR to both scientists and members of high society. Regardless, the RE-ANIMATOR was rejected by the scientific community of the early 20th century. Thus Dr. Dippel became a figure of minor importance in his day, forgotten by most, dismissed as a charlatan, a seller of snake oil and hokum.

Today, however; his RE-ANIMATOR machine is viewed by some scientists as theoretically possible, based on a description of how it works: It uses a vial of electro chemicals and animal electric fluid, gathered from a living donor by way of two hand probes. Here, the energies are gathered and induced into the bell jar from the induction ring that sits on top the bell jar. A small amount of electrified salts are injected in a gas from microscopic vents in the specimen platform. The resonant energy is enough to briefly activate the muscles of the recently dead for a brief moment. Recently I acquired the RE-ANIMATOR from the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, which due to financial problems, closed its doors in January 2010. This Museum held an auction in February 2010, attended by hundreds. At this auction, the RE-ANIMATOR was sold to the highest bidder, me.
